Happy New Year VAO fans!

As usual, we presented the incredible "All That Strauss" program to ring in the new year. we met on the 29th in Graz for a long day of rehearsals followed by a cozy get-together at Heinrich’s groovy pad in downtown Graz. On the 30th we got to perform for the very nice crowd at the "General Musik Direktion", a totally hip club that is one of our favorite places to play (see tour diary fall 2004). The band had an O.K. night, but because the program is difficult and alot of guys were playing Strauss for the first time there were a few small mistakes. The audience liked us regardless and the soloists had a good night to help save things. We were all in bed punctually (after the late night on Thursday) and were up and on our way back to Vienna early on new years’s eve to get last minute shopping done and get our supplies in for the long weekend.
The crowd on the 31st was better than our normal New Year’s eve crowd. Usually we get a large amount of people who are expecting a big party instead of a jazz concert and they are generally disappointed. This year the audience was made up exclusively of jazz fans and the band played great as a result. we rang in 2006 with the "Blue Danube Waltz" at midnight an then played a smoking set of Ellington to close the evening.
The band crawled into the soundcheck on Sunday looking a bit worse for wear after the very long night. The band actually played better in a hung- over condition but the crowd was a bit tired as well. Once again, the soloists carried the night.
mathias came up with some great surprises for this year’s program and since I’m currently in Germany at a recording session I’ll shut up now and let the great photos do the talking and give you an impression of the VAO and "ALL THAT STRAUSS 2006".have fun and see you soon...
